Welcome to Brookline SmartSummers 2017, a summer enrichment program for children ages 5 through 13. Open to Brookline residents and non-residents, we offer a wide variety of educational programs that meet from one to eight weeks. In addition to having lots of fun, children will enjoy indoor and outdoor activities and learn new skills. We can't wait to see you this summer!

One-Week Sessions in JulyBooks

From classic stories to contemporary chronicles, children's books are colorful and cheerful, and filled with fabulous details. In the following programs, for five and six year olds, we'll read exciting stories, and then discover how to bring them to life through art, drama, games, and exploration. Each day will include story and snack time, group projects, and in-and-outdoor activities.

Colorful Creatures
July 10  - July 14
We will look closely at well-known and imaginative animals from children’s book illustrators like Eric Carle, Julia Donaldson, and Mo Willems. We’ll take their ideas and craft our own colorful creatures through 2D and 3D projects. Our imaginations will guide us as we work individually and in teams.

Brown Bear, What Do You See
July 10  - July 14
Fairytales and fables are captivating. Imagine yourself in a world filled with wise animals, knights in shining armor, and roaming dragons. We'll read different versions of well-loved fairy tales, explore their messages, and compare their heroes. We'll make crafts that relate to the stories, act out scenes, and produce our own fairy tale books to take home and share.

Map It!
July 17 - July 21
It's exciting to think about our place in the world. Where are we, where are our families, and where do our friends in the neighborhood fit in? We will make walking and subway maps of all shapes and sizes, and create where in the world collages, room plans, and maps about ourselves. We will learn how to read and follow a scavenger hunt map that ends with a fun treasure.

The Magic of Art
July 17 - July 21
Practice seeing and thinking like an artist. We’ll look for inspiration from famous artworks to try out techniques using paints, pastels, pencils, and collage materials. We’ll discover new ways of looking at shapes, lines, colors, forms, and artistic concepts by copying works we love by artists such as Picasso, Seurat, Pollack, and Monet, and conclude by making our own masterpiece.

Building Basics
July 24 - July 28
Building a sturdy bridge, saving an egg, or floating a boat takes more than materials. You have to consider, the length, the weight, and the structure of you project. Creating challenges posed from storybooks like Yertle the Turtle, we will explore how budding engineers and architects research and plan. Then, using everyday materials we’ve thoughtfully chosen, we’ll build our own construction masterpieces.

Kids Around the World 
July 24 - July 28
Travel to foreign lands through pictures, illustrations, and descriptions of children around the world playing, working, eating, and spending time with their families. While discussing our observations about people, places, and lifestyles, we'll make souvenirs, learn songs and dances, and stamp our passports with special seals. Using our imaginations and the power of books, we will travel together to far away lands!

Creative Design
July 31 - August 4
The more you look, the more you see. Some illustrators really know how to stretch their imagination when it comes to choosing and using materials. After looking closely at popular inventive illustrations, we’ll use materials gathered from nature, the odds and ends drawer, and our art box to create our own works. Beginning illustrators will learn how to be masters of creativity.

Bugs Galore
July 31 - August 4
After reading stories that emphasize the creepy crawlies in nature, we'll get busy with activities that encourage us take a closer look at the world of bugs. Young scientists will use magnifying lenses, dig through leaf piles, and listen for insect noises as we observe and explore bugs that crawl and fly. We will showcase our findings in science journals and through crafty projects.

Exercise your imagination with the magic of puppetry! We will explore a world of puppetry styles as we design and build colorful characters in many shapes and sizes. Together, we'll learn how to bring original stories and scenes to life on the puppet stage, and then put on a show for our friends to enjoy.

Young artists will enjoy their afternoons both indoors and outdoors by exploring the fundamentals of drawing, painting, pottery, or sculpture in specialized art studios. Joining the Creative Arts program, we'll work on fun group and individual projects that incorporate oil and soft pastels, watercolor, acrylics, clay, paper, wood, wire, and a range of other media. Active outdoor games, and a trip to the kitchen to whip up tasty snacks will be part of the fun.

Does your child love the world of make-believe and acting? Students will listen to popular children's stories and develop their flair for the dramatic through the magic of music, dance, acting, and theatrical projects related to the story. We’ll make simple sets and costumes, play improvisational games, and perform mini-scenes to build teamwork and confidence. Weekly themes, workshops, and special guests will vary. Activities will take place both indoors and outside.

Calling all aspiring young actors and actresses! Are you ready to take your talents to new heights? If you like to dance, sing, and tell stories, Theater Arts Jr. will improve your acting and performing skills. From popular story-books to silly songs and skits, we'll create mini-plays that are a balance of scripted and improvised material. Outdoor play and art projects will also be part of our day.

This performance program offers young entertainers a chance  to explore the world of theater. Each day children will  participate in engaging acting, music, dance, and art classes.

In  addition, we'll collaborate with professional artists and  educators to create a new and original show. Students will learn  dialogue and choreography and help create scripts, sets, and  musical numbers. Each session will culminate with a unique, formal performance. Outdoor games and water play will be part of our program. This summer we'll use Harry Potter as our theme.

 I have it! Learn, gain understanding, and experience the world above, around, and below through active exploration and hands-on activities and projects. Weekly themes, such as meteorology, engineering, and biology, will guide us as we build weather stations, launch rockets, recreate ancient machines, and examine creatures big and small. Young scientists will enjoy experimenting, building models, playing games, and acting out ideas to discover how and why things work the way they do. Outdoor fun and activities, and swimming will be part of our daily program.

Expand your creativity! Creative Arts offers an action-packed multi-arts summer experience featuring classes in ceramics, sculpture, drawing and painting, edible arts, and world crafts. Hands-on exploration, teamwork, and fun will be our theme each day as students immerse themselves in the arts, while developing their own personal expression and making new friends. Guest artists and performers, indoor/outdoor recreation games, swim time (ages 7 and up), and water play will also be a part of our program. Our first week is a full day program for 5-12 year olds. Two week sessions are for 7-12 year olds.

In this activity-filled program students will learn to design their own websites with sounds, photos, movies, and colorful text. They will produce a claymation movie using stop motion software, or write and film their own commercials using iMovie. They will also learn green screening techniques and create a summer movie in Brookline Interactive Group’s professional television studio. Students will create their own games using drag and drop code with online programs like Scratch, experiment with some of the latest technologies and software, and leave with a copy of their summer projects. 3-D computer games including Minecraft, outdoor fun and field games, art time in the scene shop, and swimming will round out our varied schedule.

Brookline Basketball offers boys and girls of all levels the opportunity to improve their individual skills and learn team concepts through instruction and competition. Each day's activities will include skill work (dribbling, passing, shooting and rebounding), drills to reinforce concepts of team offense and defense, and competitive games, all within an atmosphere that emphasizes sportsmanship, learning, and having fun. We'll enjoy visits from Brookline coaches, practice a few outdoor games on the Cypress Field Court, and cool off in the Tappan Street pool.

Students up to age 12 who want a full day of activity can join one of our afternoon programs for an additional fee of $130 per week.

Cooking Creations & Adventures!

Our cooking and adventure bootcamp combines culinary classes with outdoor summer activities and games. For part of the day, students will be immersed in the world of food and learn about cooking and nutrition, culinary terms, and how to follow recipes and create food gifts. We'll enjoy cooking challenges and games, making recipe books, and perhaps film our own cooking show. When we're not in the kitchen, we'll venture outdoors for active games and projects, field trips, gym adventures, and more. If you enjoy cooking and baking, as well as action-packed summer adventures, then this program is for you!

Outdoor Afternoon Adventures

Spend your afternoons hard at play. This program is for kids who love mixing active outdoor afternoon field games with excursions, arts and crafts classes, and thinking games. Our goal will be having fun as we build skills in teamwork, sportsmanship, and creativity. Afternoons will begin with a swim or a warm up activity like relay races. We’ll then play games such as soccer, Capture the Flag, Dodge Ball, Horse, and SPUD, or take field trips and scavenger hunts to nearby attractions. Arts and crafts projects and trivia games will round out our days of fun. Students coming from our Morning Basketball Program will join us at 1:30. 

Computer Workshops for 9-13
One-Week Sessions: $165

Combine summer fun with cool computer topics. Students ages 9-13 will enjoy individual and group projects at their level, and experiment with exciting technologies and software.

Use Scratch, a computer program developed at MIT, to develop animated characters and environments and create a game.

Video Production Basics
July 24 - 28, 1:00-4:30 pm
Get a crash course in all elements of video production. This program will teach you how to operate a camera, film footage both in a studio and out in the field, and even operate the control room for filming a TV program!

Make Your Own Website
July 31 - August 4, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Build a website that includes multiple pages with links, words, and pictures. You’ll choose a layout and theme that reflects topics that are important to you.

July 31 - August 4, 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Sharpen your presentation skills as you plan, script, and make a podcast. Learn to tell an interesting story, add musical interludes or some poetry, and record your podcast for friends or family to hear.

3D Design

Explore 3D design software to learn the basics of architecture and industrial design by constructing models of buildings, cars, or an item from your imagination.

Layout & Design

Create a multi-layered and multi faceted work of art using skills in photography, drawing, and Photoshop.

Basic Programming

Minecraft Mania lessons have both computer and real world components covering geology, engineering, physics, and biology. Minecraft maniacs will be excited to learn about the properties of rocks and minerals and take home their own rock collection. We'll also build skyscrapers and simple machines as well as plant our own crops in enjoyable experiential challenges.

Maker Shaker

For Ages 5-7

Get shaken' with the maker movement. Create a motorized squiggly pen or toothbrush robot, and learn to repurpose items using the engineering and design process to dream up something new, useful, and fun!

Vet School

For Ages 5-7

Learn about your favorite furry, flying and fishy friends! Make amazing animal models, build big bones, and investigate animal intestines from our favorite vertebrates: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. End the week with a featured visit with a live animal.
