From classic stories to contemporary chronicles, children's books are colorful and cheerful, and filled with fabulous details. In the following programs, for five and six year olds, we'll read exciting stories, and then discover how to bring them to life through art, drama, games, and exploration. Each day will include story and snack time, group projects, and in-and-outdoor activities.

Passport to the World
June 29 - July 6
This week we’ll read simple and entertaining stories that describe different worlds and everyday lives. We will travel through each tale, exploring new places and collecting souvenirs along the way. We will learn songs and dances, and make art from various countries, regions, and climates. We will also learn how children around the world work and play.

Look Alike, Creative Design
June 29 - July 6
The more you look, the more you see. Some illustrators really know how to stretch their imagination when it comes to choosing and using materials. We'll look at dynamic and exciting illustrators and use them as inspiration to create our own work. We’ll also experiment with paint washes, pastels, collage materials, and cardboard to create large scale works and activity backdrops.

Building Basics
July 9 - 13
Using a wide range of materials, we will create 3D structures. We will read accounts of famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Empire State Building. Using balsa wood, found objects, legos, pipe cleaners, and everyday objects we will build projects including bridges and skyscrapers and experiment with egg drops and paper construction.

The Goofy Gourmet
July 9 - 13
Storybooks are full of delicious-sounding foods that make readers want to immediately eat a plate of cookies, a sampling of sushi, or a batch of smoothies. Each week we'll read books filled with tasty-looking foods that we will then make and enjoy ourselves. We’ll learn about ingredients, how to read recipes, and about kitchen tools and rules. We'll also decorate aprons and make our own recipe books. (A $10 food fee is included in the tuition.)

Colorful Creatures
July 16-20
We will look closely at well-known and imaginative animals from children’s book illustrators like Eric Carle, Julia Donaldson, and Mo Willems. We’ll take their ideas and craft our own colorful creatures in 2D and 3D projects that reflect the style and whimsy of their creators. Our imaginations will be our guide as we work alone and in teams.

Heroes and Heroines
July 16-20
We will read tales of fictional heroes such as Superman, real life heroes like Rosa Parks, and community heroes like firefighters and nurses. Children will write their own hero tales and talk about what makes a hero. We will create our own superheroes, design their costumes, and illustrate their powers using paint, oil pastels, fabric, and clay.

Swashbucklers and Mermaids
July 23-27
Ahoy! We’ll transport ourselves to a life at sea by reading contemporary pirate and mermaid tales, such as those by Melinda Long as well as some old favorites like Captain Hook and The Little Mermaid. We will outfit ourselves in costumes, talk in a nautical lingo, create treasure boxes, and draw treasure maps. We’ll sing sea chanteys and build enchanted underwater castles as we inhabit our imaginary ocean classroom.
