Instructor Highlights - Michelle Abadia
Michelle Abadia is originally from Caguas, Puerto Rico. She lost her sight at the age of five, and by
the age of ten, Michelle had begun pursuing her interests in music and foreign languages. As a
teen, she was proficient in English, Spanish, and French, and also gained skills as a vocalist,
pianist, and guitarist.
Ms. Abadia obtained a bachelor's degree in French literature with a minor in international
relations from Boston College. Subsequently, she went on to complete a master's degree in French
literature from Tufts University, and a master's degree in vocal performance from the New England
Conservatory of Music. For four and a half years, Michelle served as a judicial language interpreter
for the Massachusetts court system.
Ms. Abadia has taught both Spanish and French at Framingham State College, Roxbury Community
College, and at various adult education programs. In addition to teaching at Brookline Adult &
Community Education, Michelle currently teaches modern languages at Babson College, Lasell College,
and Massbay community College.
Michelle became a Spanish instructor at BA&CE in Fall 2000, and over the years has taught
Beginning Spanish and Advanced Conversational Spanish courses.
Michelle has the following to say about her many students and teaching experiences at
Brookline Adult & Community Education: "Teaching any level of language to adult learners is a
thrill for me. Students who come to Brookline Adult & Community Education seem to be filled with
great anticipation and enthusiasm; that makes it such a reward for me to share my knowledge with
them. Through music and language in various other cultural contexts, I always seek to allow
students to fully participate in as many aspects of the Spanish language and Latino culture as
possible. I will always be grateful to Brookline Adult & Community Education for this invaluable
experience and for the opportunity to share the joy of learning with others."
