Instructor Highlights - Emily Singer

Emily Singer has taught acting with Brookline Adult & Community Education since 1997. She teaches course including Acting Workshop, Improvisation, The Art of Stand-Up Comedy, and Acting As If: Practical Acting Techniques for the Daily Drama.

Emily tries to set people at ease in her classes, and recognizes the courage it takes for some to even sign up for the class. She lets her students know that endeavoring to do what for most people is considered as one of the top scariest things, namely, speaking in front of groups, sets them apart from the norm right from the start.

Emily started teaching at BA&CE shortly after returning to Boston after a three-year stint in Los Angeles, where she studied acting, auditioned for films, and acted in a few low-budget productions. Her time there also included experience behind the scenes as well, as an assistant location manager, a script reader, and even a fly-on-the-wall temp in various film companies. In the late '90s she fell somewhat randomly into stand-up comedy. Her fascination with the art of comedy continues and she performs regularly. Her interest in acting starting very young. A gender-blind casting session as Cyrano de Bergerac in 6th grade opened up a world of possibilities to her and to the audience. Thought to be a shy kid, Emily's performance onstage seemed to say the opposite.

WHAT EMILY SAYS ABOUT HER CLASSES:

My teaching style is very open. I try to make the experience fun and help students conquer fears like stage fright or fear of looking silly. People take the class for a variety of reasons, everything from "I've wanted to since I was little"- to -"I'd like to give better presentations at work". On our last day of class we the group, give a final show. Students present "works-in-progress" of scenes and monologues worked on in class. It's amazing how much people can develop in just 6 or 7 weeks. The transformation is incredible. I love watching people develop.

The classes and the students inspire me, and rekindle my own passion for acting. I'm passing along the many great things I have learned from some exceptional and generous teachers and mentors in my life, from those who have helped me. I hope to introduce people to new techniques and share with them things from my experience that have worked for me.

In most of my classes there are some students who have taken the class before, and I am always deeply flattered. But I know that I can't take full credit, because we all know that this acting thing is a bit addictive. As for myself, I've had acting in my life in some shape or form for at least 20 years now. Yikes.

Even with a pretty full schedule, teaching continues to be a priority for me. I have nothing but the highest respect for BA&CE and I feel so grateful for the opportunity to teach here. I've also met some incredible people in my classes who have enriched my life in countless ways.
