Instructor Highlights - Cyrus Whittier
As a child, I loved to draw people and animals and would spend hours copying them from magazines and comic books. My parents encouraged me to take drawing
classes offered by local Art Associations during the summers we spent in Kennebunk, Maine. It was this wonderful experience that motivated me to become an artist!
In high school, I won a scholarship sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Middlebury, Vermont and was accepted to the Art Institute of Boston in the Fall of
1966 where I majored in Advertising Design/Illustration and worked in the field for about fifteen years.
When I enrolled in a figure drawing class at BA&CE in the Spring of 1985, I was immediately struck by the quality of the course, the excellence and commitment of
the instructor and the spacious studio.
The birth of my son Andrew in 1989 inspired my passion for portraiture. I began to offer privately commissioned portraits of children with very positive response.
Since then, I have expanded my repertoire to include adults and pets.
In 1992, in order to share my experiences and expertise with others, I taught Portrait
Drawing with Charcoal course at BA&CE. My goal was (and still is) to teach technical skills, but also to encourage my students to capture characteristic spirit of the sitter.
Additionally, I teach two classes which explore the substance and richness of pastels:
Portrait Drawing with Color and Introduction to Pastel; which focuses on still life.
My work is represented by Portraits North in Lexington, MA and I am a member of the Newton Art Association.
