Native Americans in New England (Sec. 01) Course Code: HU88-01 Instructor: Cerrotti Meeting Days: Wednesday Dates: 10/6/10 until 11/10/10 Meetings: 6 Time: 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM Price: $109 Location: Brookline High School Limited to: 25 attendees Or call 617-730-2700 to register BY PHONE! For the New England pilgrims and puritans who settled New England in the 17th century, the presence of an ancient Native American civilization in their midst was an obvious fact which could not be ignored. Today, however, many people are unaware of this ancient civilization, and the profound impact which it has had upon our region and nation. This course will provide a stimulating introduction to Native Americans in New England, including their material culture and history. We'll cover the ethnography and demographics of Native Americans in New England from the 16th century to the present, and special attention will be given to the Pequot and King Philip's War, as well as to the subsequent developments which eventually led to the disappearance of most Native American people and culture throughout the region. We will also focus on people who once lived in Brookline and the Boston region. Source materials will be provided for reading, including a copy of Roger Williams' 1643 study A Key Into the Language of America. Please note: Some courses may have an additional materials fee payable to the instructor that is not included in the total fee. Please contact the school for details. Please be sure to read our Refund, Transfer, and Withdrawal policy before registering for a class. A $6 registration fee is charged once per person per semester. This fee helps fund scholarships so that all can participate. The fee does not apply to courses of $15 or less. |
