Jews in Hollywood: In Front Of and Behind the Camera (Sec. 01) Course Code: J146-01 Instructor: Kimmel Meeting Days: Thursday Date: 10/14/10 Meetings: 1 Time: 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Price: $6 Location: Brookline High School Limited to: 50 attendees Or call 617-730-2700 to register BY PHONE! From the founding of the motion picture industry by immigrants like Samuel Goldwyn (originally Gelbfisz) and the Warner Brothers, to the movies of Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg, the history of Jews in America has been linked with the world of film. On this evening, Daniel M. Kimmel, writer of the Movie Maven column for the Jewish Advocate, will provide an overview of a century of movies showing how the fortunes of Jews on and off screen were linked. Among the topics we will touch upon include why Jewish characters all but disappeared from the screen for two decades; the race to produce the first Hollywood feature condemning anti-Semitism; and what happens when the lead character in a romantic comedy is a rabbi. From the silent era to recent Oscar winners, this is a talk that will make you want to take a fresh look at old favorites and encounter some new ones. Please note: Some courses may have an additional materials fee payable to the instructor that is not included in the total fee. Please contact the school for details. Please be sure to read our Refund, Transfer, and Withdrawal policy before registering for a class. A $6 registration fee is charged once per person per semester. This fee helps fund scholarships so that all can participate. The fee does not apply to courses of $15 or less. |
