The honeybee is an amazing insect. Indeed, this social insect is so linked to human life that the recent, catastrophic demise of hives due to invasive mites and the mysterious colony collapse disorder has rattled big business, politicians, and governments worldwide. Researchers around the globe have been probing possible causes of the plight and, as you can imagine, there has been a lot of finger pointing. Could there be a new pathogen? Has widespread use of pesticides and other chemicals caused the epidemic? What about microwave towers that might be interrupting honeybee navigation systems? On this evening, a journalist who keeps her finger on the pulse of the beekeeping world, will discuss current bee news, and will explore the fascinating world of the honeybee, and the subcultures of people who are mud-wrestling over the fate of this crucial species.
