Henri Matisse, born Emile-Beno¿t (1869-1954), is among the most important and pioneering artists of the 20th century. Considered to be one of the greatest colorists of all time, his paintings are a feast of vivid, pure color with bold patterns and ornamentation. The leader of the Fauvist movement, his works were characterized by flat patterns and free handling of color. After World War I, he painted beautiful odalisques, influenced by his stay in Morocco, and exotic interiors of the South of France. An extremely versatile artist, his inventive works also include sculpture, prints, and expressive collages and cut-outs. Join us for a glimpse into the life and work of one of the most important French painters of the 20th century. Hear details of Henri Matisse's long and varied career, which covered many different styles of painting from Impressionism to near Abstraction, and view images of his bold interiors, colorful landscapes, patterned still-lifes, decorative odalisques, and geometric cut-outs.
